'Summer evening on the River Exe' is an en plein air watercolour painting. One early evening in late August 2019, I ventured to Topsham for a spot of dinner. The restaurant didn't open for half and hour, so I made use of the time by creating this little watercolour study. Standing in the evening sun, behind the antiques shop on the Quay in Topsham, I propped my easel on a post at the river's edge and applied sweeping washes of watercolour and rolled a big round brush across the painting to quickly establish the sky, clouds, distant landscape and river. Once this had dried (very quickly in the breezy conditions) I used watercolour marker pen to draw
