'The city, the hills' - this view, actually from the top level of the Guildhall carpark in Exeter has always caught my eye, not just because the rolling Devon hills that act as background for the church tower make for a nice outlook but because, for me, this pretty much sums up Exeter...just popping into the city centre, park the car in a multi-storey, look up, total scenic beauty right there over the roof tops. This painting, with St Michael and All Angels church as the centre piece was created using free-flowing washes of watercolor and ball-point pen to create a somewhat realistic but surreal and expressive landscape painting. There is a real sense of light and space and the distant hills could almost be covered in snow.
