The Sunday Art Show - Exeter Cathedral Watercolour Painting

The Sunday Art Show - Exeter Cathedral Watercolour Painting

This week's video is all about watercolour painting. I show you, step by step, how I created "Autumn at Exeter Cathedral" see the finished painting or buy a print etc here: https://mike-jory.pixels.com/featured/exeter-cathedral-watercolour-painting-mike-jory.html
Starting with a very simple line drawing that only includes basic shapes, I take a loose and lively approach to painting Exeter Cathedral in watercolour. Thin washes are applied first, then some quick gestural brushwork is used to pick out details here and there and create a variety of textures. I move trees around to create a better composition for this large building in the county town of Devon, work in an impressionist style, keeping things simple but effective and always maintaining a sense of space and light. Materials used:
Flat and round synthetic brushes, A2 Daler Rowney mixed media paper, Winsor and Newton watercolours: Burnt umber, french ultramarine, cadmium yellow, alizarin crimson. Also used a little bit of atelier interactive acrylic at the end: titanium white, alizarin crimson, french ultramarine. Winsor and Newton watercolour marker pen turquoise

If you want to check out Rob Wilson's website, you can find that here: www.robwilsonart.co.uk

I start out by briefly going through the application process for the competition, then I describe my day, from being filmed, to painting en plein air, meeting famous artists and battling with rain storms. There were lots of possible subjects to paint, including battleships, sail boats, stormy skies, the sea, a lighthouse, grand buildings etc. I elected to paint the view across the water of Drakes Island. All in all, I had a fantastic day! Hope you enjoy the video.
